Railway telematics is referred to as the use of informatics and telecommunications in the railways, which comprises services that enable data transfer and communication over long distances. Owing to the advancement of telematics technologies with increasing incorporation of the Internet of Things (IoT), railcar owners can capture the data such as whether a railcar is loaded fully or partially, the temperature of onboard bearing, if the doors or hatches are open or closed, the impact of wheel detection data, and other required solutions to permit running railcar services efficiently. It is also used to manage data which is generated through the use of technology and implement the changes on idle rail cars during maintenance and decrease the time taken in the turnaround of railcars, control stock, and others.

Due to the increase in urbanization worldwide resulting in the development of smart cities, the need for railways telematics has increased, which is one of the major driving factors for the growth of the market. Governmental bodies worldwide are undertaking various initiatives for smart cities to provide better infrastructure for transportation and increase the pace of operational activities in public transportation services. The implementation of intelligent railway systems needs combined efforts from various stakeholders such as telecom operators, manufacturers, public sectors, infrastructure providers, service providers, and user groups. Several government authorities are implementing Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models in railways, which permits private sector companies to contribute to intelligent railways initiatives offered by the governments to organize and finance transportation projects. One of the major restraints in railway telematics is the high cost of installation. The telematics system also needs high maintenance and data collection platforms, which results in high total expenditure. Key challenges for this market are concerns related to data privacy and security.  Due to the lack of open interface and proper protocols issues, several smart devices and sensors cannot incorporate into the existing system architecture.

Market Segmentation:

The railway telematics market can be segmented by solutions, by component, and by region. Based on solutions, it is further sub-segmented into fleet management, automatic stock control, shock detection, remote data access, railcar tracking and tracing, reefer wagon management, collision detection and preventions, and others. The collision detection and prevention segment accounted for the largest market share in 2020. Factors such as increased demand for safety over high-density rail networks at high speed and modernization of automatic train control systems are expected to drive the growth of the segment. Based on components, the market is segmented into TCU and sensors. The sensors segment accounted for the largest market share in 2020. Factors such as the implementation of numerous sensors in several solutions such as railcar tracing and tracking, collision detection and prevention, and shock detections for accurate threat analysis are expected to drive the growth of the segment.
