Ride-by-wire uses a throttle position sensor and an electric wire instead of a mechanical cable that transmits the signal to the Engine Control Unit. Ride-by-wire technology eliminates any mechanical linkages between the accelerator and the throttle. The air-fuel supply is more accurately controlled by the system using the sensors, including ECU and actuators. ECU continuously monitors the engine speed, gear engaged, wheel speed, unburnt oxygen or fuel in the exhaust system, and other critical parameters and ensures that the air-fuel mixture fed into the combustion chamber is always optimum.

Earlier, ride-by-wire technology was used only in large-capacity motorcycle engines designed for race track use. However, now this technology finds its applications even in smaller capacity engines. Also, governments worldwide are getting more environmentally conscious, leading to stricter emission standards, and using ride-by-wire reduces emissions by avoiding incomplete fuel combustion. These factors can act as growth drivers for the ride-by-wire market.

Although ride-by-wire has many advantages, the sensors used in ride-by-wire are expensive to manufacture and replace, which might act as a restraining factor and inhibit the growth of ride by wire market.

Impact of COVID-19 on Ride-by-Wire Market

Covid-19 affected most industries across the globe due to lockdowns enforced by governments in several nations. These lockdowns had a severe impact on the automobile sector. Ride-by-wire requires sensors, ECU's and these require semiconductors.

During the pandemic, the operations of semiconductor manufacturing companies stopped due to labor shortages. Still, the demand for computers and laptops rose rapidly due to an increase in work-from-home jobs. Also, poor inventory planning by the automotive companies led to a shortage of semiconductors for automotive manufacturers during the pandemic. This shortage of semiconductors impacted the production of sensors and ECUs required for ride-by-wire systems.

The pandemic caused a decrease in the demand for high-performance bikes, negatively impacting the ride-by-wire market. With people staying at home and travel restrictions in place, the sales of high-performance bikes decreased, resulting in a decline in the ride-by-wire market.

Regional Analysis

North America is projected to hold a significant share in the ride-by-wire market as consumers interested in high-performance bikes are growing. Also, due to increased road-legal high-performance bikes over the foreseeable future, Western Europe is anticipated to be the second largest market for the ride-by-wire market.

In the Asia Pacific area, China and Japan are anticipated to expand at decent growth rates throughout the projected period due to the steadily rising disposable income of the middle-class population and considerable growth in bike racing.

With increasing interest in recreational bike racing and touring activities, Latin America is also expected to grow significantly in the two-wheeler ride-by-wire market.

The Middle East and Africa may also contribute to the worldwide ride-by-wire market's expansion. The MEA region has experienced an increase in demand for high-performance motorcycles, particularly in countries like UAE and Saudi Arabia, due to the growing popularity of motorsports such as MotoGP and Superbike World Championship.
