The automotive piston rings are metal rings that are situated between the piston and the cylinder which allow the engine to function accurately. The main function of the automotive piston rings in a vehicle is that it seals the cylinder from the sides in order to protect the gas from leaking during combustion, also maintains the amount of lubricant, help release heat generated during ignition, and prevents the pistons from hitting the cylinder walls. Generally, each cylinder comprises of three automobile piston rings, one oil wiper piston ring, and two compression piston rings. The development of manufacturing technology, and the technological advancement in the materials as well as extensive adoption of internal combustion engines (ICEs) owing to the rising awareness concerning to the importance of curbing the carbon footprints are few of the many major factors that are most likely to create high demand opportunities for the automakers over the forecast period. The emission standards set by the government such as the Euro 6 environmental standard in Europe and BSVI emission standard in India are the standards that aims to reduce the emission of vehicles, precisely the Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and other particulate matters. Thus, these factors are expected to fuel the growth of the automotive piston rings market.

Market Segmentation:

Globally, the automotive piston ring market is segmented by type, by vehicle type, and by geographic coverage. Based on type, the market is further segmented into ductile iron, grey cast iron, and steel.

The piston rings tends to wear out during to the constant up and down movement of the pistons in the cylinder bore owing to their own inherent weight and also owing to the gas pressures acting on the rings. In order to minimize this wearing, they are usually made of wear-resistant materials such as steel and cast iron and are treated or coated to improve the resistance to wear. The grey cast iron rings are used for making oil rings owing to their sustenance in high pressures and high strength characteristics. Steel piston rings are used to seal the walls of the cylinder in order to eliminate the risk of gas evaporation. It is estimated that around 20% of the evaporation vehicular emissions results in evaporation. Thus, the central government has imposed emission standards to reduce the rate of gas evaporation in the atmosphere. Consequently, steel automotive piston rings are most likely to gain high traction in the global market as the automotive manufacturers are integrating advanced automotive piston rings in vehicle engines to meet the government standards. Therefore, these factors are expected to boost the growth of the automotive steel piston rings market. The vehicle type is further segmented into passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The passenger cars segment holds the major share in the global market owing to the increasing income levels and improvement in the living standards which is leading to increasing demand for personal cars. Also, the rapid growth in the sales and production of passenger cars is expected to fuel the growth of the automotive piston ring market in passenger cars segment.

Key Industry Developments:

  • In April 2021, one of the supplier of continental AG-“Hartzell Engine Technologies” has recently announced their expansion in Tulsa. Further, the company is planning to continue to develop alternate uses of their technology in military and UAV applications. In addition, the company received PMA for their Sky-Tec starter adapter for Continental piston engines.

  • In April 2021, piston leader player Tenneco is using the advanced technologies to meet the co2 emission challenges. Company is developing the Monosteel piston that are capable of withstanding firing pressures up to 300 bars along with providing durability & strength to the heavy duty engine application. Moreover, company’s team is currently working on development of new technologies for the china 7 complaint engines and also on the Phase IV Fuel Consumption regulation.

  • In May 2021, heavy machinery manufacturer JCB has recently unveiled the hydrogen-fuelled combustion engine technology which claims that the engine does not emit any Co2 and their hydrogen-fueled piston engine will help to achieve the UK government’s zero-emissions target quicker.

  • In July 2020, considering the trend of using 3D printing technology for the multiple components in vehicles, multiple companies started experimenting their expertise into the component manufacturing. Similarly, a German high performance sport car manufacturer –Porsche has developed the 3D printed pistons for their sport car “911 GT2 RS”. Moreover, this has built in collaboration with the Mahle Company, a 3D printer manufacturer-“Trumpf” and a German manufacturer of optical systems and optoelectronics-“Zeiss”. In addition, the resulted piston have 10% lighter in weight and also improves efficiency.

Regional Analysis:

Geographically, the automotive piston ring market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the rest of the world. Asia Pacific accounts for the largest share in the global market and is expected to uphold its leading position in the forecast period. Countries such as India, China, Vietnam, and Indonesia are the world’s largest contributors in the manufacturing of two wheelers owing to the high demographic rate, especially high number of young population which prefers two wheelers. Also, the sales and production of passenger cars in this region is the highest amongst other regions owing to the presence of leading automotive players. Also, the automotive companies are investing a high percentage of money to expand their production capabilities in the emerging countries of this region. Europe and North America also shows an exponential growth in the global automotive piston ring market owing to the increasing demand for passenger cars as well as expansion of industrialization which fuels the commercial vehicle market in North America.
