Bariatric surgery is an alternative method to lose weight without any exercise or changes in diet. It works by making changes to the intestine. Bariatric surgery devices are used to perform procedures such as adjustable gastric banding, gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch, sleeve gastrectomy, and others.

The multifold increase in obesity is one of the major driving factors for the growing number of bariatric surgeries. According to World Obesity Federation, adult obesity is more common and a growing public health issue.

  • According to WHO, in 2020, 39 million children under the age of 5 were obese.

  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), during 2017-2020, the obesity prevalence in the US was 41.9%, which has increased by approximately 11.5% since 2000.

Technological innovations in bariatric surgeries are another driving factor for increasing the adoption of such surgeries. The introduction of robots for bariatric surgery provides better clarity and makes small incisions (minimally invasive surgeries) more feasible.

  • In June 2021, Intuitive Surgical launched a robotic-assisted surgical stapler called SureForm. SureForm is equipped with SmartFire technology, which monitors tissue compression before and during firing, making automatic adjustments to optimize the staple line.

Additionally, the implementation of machine learning and artificial intelligence paved the way by helping surgeons predict certain outcomes and search for unknown patterns. This can quickly and efficiently provide insights to inform clinical teams to drive better outcomes.

Moreover, with the growing acceptance and need for bariatric surgeries to reduce the healthcare burden, governments have developed certain reimbursement policies. For instance, in Canada, Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers a gastric bypass surgery procedure if BMI is over 40 or if BMI is over 35 and the patient has serious weight-related health conditions.

However, the high cost associated with bariatric surgeries might limit the global bariatric surgery devices market growth during the forecast period.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Bariatric Surgery Devices Market

The bariatric surgery devices market was negatively impacted in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. This was due to the lockdown restrictions and postponement of the non-emergency procedures during the pandemic.  This resulted in increased cases of obesity. However, during the second wave, the demand for bariatric surgery increased tremendously, as a link was found between obesity and COVID-19. For instance, according to an article published by the CDC in September 2022, obesity can triple the risk of COVID-19 infection.

  • As per the same CDC data, more than 900,000 adults affected with COVID-19 were hospitalized in the U.S. from the beginning of the pandemic till November 2020. It was estimated that 271,800 (30.2%) of these patients had obesity.

Therefore, since the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the market has been booming and is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period.

Analysis by Device Type

Stapling devices account for a significant proportion of the global bariatric surgery devices market. The dominance of the market is attributed to the company’s increased focus on new product launches and the adoption of advanced technology in the development of new bariatric surgery devices.

  • In April 2021, Standard Bariatrics, Inc. received FDA approval for the Titan SGS surgical stapler allowing it to be used in bariatric surgery requiring the creation of sleeve pouch anatomy (sleeve gastrectomy).

Regional Analysis

The bariatric surgery devices market in Asia Pacific is anticipated to experience a significant growth rate. The main factor attributed to the region’s significant growth is the rising prevalence of obesity. For instance, according to an article published in MDPI in September 2022, after industrialization, the availability of processed foods and the westernization of dietary trends resulted in an estimated 40.9% obese prevalence among adults in the APAC region. This prevalence imposed an estimated economic impact of approximately 12% of total healthcare spending on obesity or related diseases.
