Bench power supplies provide DC (direct current) voltage to power the devices under tests, such as circuit boards and electronic products. Bench and laboratory power supplies are typically in the engineer's work area or bench, deriving the name of the bench power supply.

Compared to consumer product power supplies, bench power supplies have lower ripple current, more precise control of voltage and current levels, protection of the circuit under test, and multiple outputs that simultaneously power multiple circuits or circuit parts. The bench power supply has a delicate and coarse adjustment to repeat the required DC output accurately. They provide clean, controlled power and can be focused on the circuit rather than the power source. These factors will increase the demand for DC bench power supplies.

  • According to Aim-TTi, an electronics test and measurement specialist, big Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) draw a lot of currents. Bench power supplies are generally capable of providing up to 60V and also 20A at lower voltages. There is a shift in demand for multi-rail supply for PCBs and increased demand for bench power supplies that provide more than 60V and more than 20A, with overall power levels ranging from 300W to 1kW.

Bench power supplies are bulky and expensive, and they have several limitations. Due to the necessary heat dissipation structure, none of them are genuinely portable or handheld. Also, even high-cost power supplies do not support zero current or voltage and cannot match short-circuit and transient performance. They require heat sinks and forced airflow to sufficiently dissipate the heat. These factors will stagnate the market.

  • According to Analog Devices, a manufacturer of ICs and analog devices, one can build a portable bench power supply using a 1.5A low dropout linear regulator. According to the proposed design, there is no requirement for a heat sink or fan, whereas generally, bench power supplies using power transistors require heat sinks and fans to sufficiently dissipate the heat.

Countries like the United States and Canada are considered to be the leading markets for bench power supply. The growing wireless communication & infrastructure and aerospace & defense segment likely boost the demand for bench power supplies.

  • In January 2020, the Competition Commission of India launched a Market Study on the Telecom Sector in India. India's telecom sector is one of the largest and fastest-growing networks in the world. In the first decade of the 21st century, subscribers grew by 33% annually.

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE BENCH POWER SUPPLY MARKET

The Bench Power Supply Market is expected to take a significant amount of time before recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic due to industry shutdowns causing energy requirement reductions

  • According to the International Finance Corporation, in March and April 2020, a 15% drop in power demand, on average, was observed in many countries.

Although the electrical & electronics industry is slowly gaining momentum due to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, bench power supply demand is anticipated to rise slower. The U.S. EIA projected a 2% decline in electricity demand globally in 2020. In 2021 electricity demand is expected to grow by 3% slower than the anticipated 5.2% real GDP growth.

KEY INSIGHTS

The report will cover the following key insights:

  • Recent Advancements in Bench Power Supply

  • Key Industry Trends

  • Regulatory Landscape for Bench Power Supply

  • Key Industry Developments (Mergers, Acquisitions, and Partnerships)

  • Impact of COVID-19 on the Market

ANALYSIS BY OUTPUT

The global bench power supply market can be divided into single and multi-channel, based on output. The multi-channel segment dominates the market. A single-channel power supply has only one controllable output, while a multi-channel power supply has two or more outputs. Multi-channel power supplies are often used to develop devices with digital and analog circuits or bipolar circuits. These advantages will help the multi-channel segment grow during the forecast period.

REGIONAL ANALYSIS

The Asia-Pacific region is expected to be the fastest-growing market during the forecast period. Major manufacturers have manufacturing bases in China, where many power supplies are needed each year to meet testing requirements. Furthermore, the rise of industrial automation in countries such as India and Japan and the strict regulations and standards for industrial electronic products in developing countries such as China, Japan, and India are also growth drivers.

KEY PLAYERS COVERED

The report will include profiles of key players such as Keysight Technologies, Aim-TTi, AMETEK Programmable Power, B&K Precision Corporation, EA Elektro-Automatik, Good Will Instrument Co., Ltd., Kikusui Electronics Corporation, Tektronix, RIGOL TECHNOLOGIES, Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, and Tenma Srl.
