The use of synthetic pesticides in large quantities has negatively affected the environment due to pollution and ecological damage. Hence, producers are looking for a natural alternative to control and manage pest. The increasing demand for organic alternatives is expected to propel the demand for bioinsecticides in the global market.

Bioinsecticides are organic formulations used to manage insects without affecting the environment and non-target animals. Furthermore, bioinsecticides do not allow insects to develop resistance quickly and thus helps to eradicate pest and cure plants suffering from these diseases.

Bioinsecticides act by two modes of action; namely, direct contact and ingestion. For instance, indirect contact, bioinsecticides kill the pest when they are in direct contact with the insecticide. Some example of such kind of bioinsecticides are Met52 and NoFly. During the ingestion method, the pests are killed as they ingest the bioinsecticides. Example of such kind of bioinsecticides is Gemstar which kills the pest when they ingest the bioinsecticide.

Bioinsecticides offer various advantages, such as effectiveness when applied in small quantities and the ability to attack a specifically targeted organism. In addition, bioinsecticides are easy and safe to handle compared to synthetic products which are complex and costly to handle. The ability of pests to develop resistance against bioinsecticides is also considered to below. They are also compatible to use in combination with conventional products as well as synthetic products; hence, bioinsecticides are used easily in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.

Although, bioinsecticides have several advantages, there are also some disadvantages associated with its use. Studies found out that the efficacy of bioinsecticides is low compared to synthetic pesticides. Additionally, the action of synthetic or chemical insecticides persists for a longer period, whereas bioinsecticides persist for a shorter period. Additionally, the lack of technical knowledge is one of the main reasons behind the low adoption of the product among farmers in developing nations.

Key Players Covered:

The key players of the global bioinsecticides market are BASF SE, Syngenta AG, Marrone Bio Innovations, Bayer AG, Novozymes, Nufarm. Other major players are Som Phytopharma India Ltd, BioWorks Inc., Camson Biotechnologies Ltd, Andermatt Biocontrol AG, and Kan Biosys, among others.

Bioinsecticides are highly useful for pest management in hot and humid areas; and the pest population is high. In recent years, companies are investing in developing new products which enables them to strengthen the integrated pest management programs. As farmers who use conventional pest management methods are switching to organic methods, new market opportunities are available for manufacturers to develop new and better product formulations and increase competitiveness in the market. For instance, companies such as Valent, Bayer, Syngenta, Certis, Novozymes, Bioworks and others are working to develop bioinsecticides that can be used for growing fruits, vegetables, and other organic produce.

For launching the products in the market, companies need to obtain certifications from regulatory bodies such as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Pest Management and Regulatory Agency (PMRA), and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), to ensure that the products are non-hazardous in nature. Due to increased demand for sustainable agriculture and the use of non-hazardous chemicals for pest management, EPA provides regulatory relief to certain bioinsecticides such as insect repellants and attractants, biochemical insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, nematicides, among others. This encourages companies to develop new products and launch them in the market.

Regional Analysis:

Bioinsecticide market in North America is expected to increase in recent years significantly. This can be attributed to the rising awareness among the consumers about the maximum residue level (MRL) on the fruits and vegetables. Consumers are thus looking for residue-free fruits and vegetables, which has resulted in the increase in the demand for organic insecticides among the producers in this region.
