The desulfurization gypsum is also called flue gas desulfurization (GDD) gypsum or synthetic gypsum. It is produced from the purification and desulfurization of flue gas. Whereas, the flue gas desulfurization is a technology, which is utilized in order to remove sulfur dioxide from exhaust flue gases of fossil-fuel power plants. Its production process is composed of hot air furnace, preheating, calcining, dust collecting, modifying, conveying, packing, and storage systems. This manufacturing process is environment-friendly and offers a sustainable source of pure gypsum. The desulfurization gypsum finds its use in into glass making, water treatment, cement production, mining applications, highway construction, gypsum panel products, and agriculture applications.

The rising demand for desulphurization gypsum in the agriculture and construction industry to fuel market growth. In the construction industry, the FGD gypsum is utilized in the production of cement, plaster of Paris, and wallboard. Whereas, in agriculture, the product is used as a soil amendment in several hydrogeological and soil conditions. As a conditioner, it is used to enhance the physical properties of soil. It also aids in removing nutrient movement and sediment to surface water. Hence, increasing product utilization in these applications will contribute to boosting the desulphurization gypsum market growth during the forecast timeline.

However, the high demand for the product and long-time taking production process are some of the factors that cause the unavailability of desulphurization gypsum. Thereby, restricts its adoption in various application and is anticipated to hamper the market growth.

Desulphurization Gypsum Industry Developments

  • In October 2018, Shree Cement has ordered a TRT 5000/8.0 Triplex dryer from Germany’s Gebr. Pfeiffer. With the help of this dryer, the company will dry flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) gypsum from a captive coal-power plant for use in cement plants. This product will help the company to improve its productivity.

  • In September 2017, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd has signed an agreement with Serbian electric power company to installed flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems in the Nikola Tesla A coal-fired power plant. (TENT A) in Serbia. The project worth is EUR 167 million. This development will help Mitsubishi to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) and enable Serbia to meet EU environmental standards.
