Emulsion polymers are the radical polymerization that starts with the emulsion phase comprising water, monomer, and surfactant most commonly done emulsion is an emulsion of oil in water. There are two types of emulsion polymers, bio-based and synthetic, depending on their structure and the method of polymerisation. Emulsion polymers have high molecular weight, possesses rapid polymerization, and also are environmental friendly. In paper industry, emulsion polymers have application in sheets, paper bags, boxes, cartons, and other items. In adhesive market, it is used as binding agents such as bands, stickers, glue, windings and hygiene products in adhesives. These end-user segments contribute in large part to the growth of the polymer emulsion industry.

The growth of the emulsion polymer market is driven by increased awareness among consumers about painting ideas and protective coatings and also due to growing trend in interior decor. Moreover,  the wide use of color and coating compounds in the automotive sector, is the another factor boosting market growth. In addition, the consumer's preference for environmentally friendly products to provide a safe and healthy environment has increased global demand for water-based polymer emulsion. Growing population is a function of worldwide large-scale urbanization, which contributes to the need to create homes, resulting in increased demand for end-user goods.

Increasing competition and environmental issues faced by manufacturers that force them to produce high-quality, safe, environmentally friendly materials are factors that adversely affect market growth.

Regional Analysis:

In terms of geography, the emulsion polymer market is categorised into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa.

Asia Pacific is the world market leader for polymer emulsions. Emulsion polymer demand in China and India benefits from strong economic growth and increased penetration of waterborne technology into the coating and adhesive industries. In North America, where water-based paints dominate the architectural market, there is ample opportunity for emulsion polymers to dominate the market.

Europe also holds a prominent share in the market as the automotive and specialty coatings industries have high demand for emulsion polymers. The Middle East and Africa is projected to grow in future as it has driven the need for high-quality paints and coatings that are expected to increase the volumes of industry. Latin America is comparatively smaller market but increasing infrastructure development and rising economic growth, are expected to boost the growth in this region.

Emulsion Polymers Industry Developments

  • In March 2018, BASF SE based in Germany has expanded its Joncryl water-based emulsion production facilities at its Ludwigshafen site. This will reinforce the company's position as a leading producer of water-based resin and emulsion used in overprint lacquers, printing inks, and functional coatings for flexible packaging and paper & board applications

  • In September 2018, Synthomer plc, a leading speciality chemical company, based in UK had purchased the S BASF Austrian SBR business  Pischelsdorf. This business manufactures rubber styrene butadiene which is used in the paper industry, especially in packaging. This will enhance the Synthomer’s SBR business as well as the paper / packaging applications production network.

  • In August 2018, Synthomer plc (UK) has invested USD 16 million at its Roebuck, South Carolina plant for a new polymerizing reactor and other facilities. The investment would support growth for the company in both new applications and markets.
