A fuse base is an electronic device used to accommodate, install, and protect a fuse. There are two types of fuse holders: open and fully enclosed. Open fuse bases have fuse blocks, clips, plug covers, and plug varieties. Fully enclosed fuse bases use a fuse holder, insert the fuse holder into the holder or other places to completely close the fuse.

The growing demand for telecom towers is expected to drive the global fuse base market growth prospects in the next few years. Some of the main factors contributing to the growth of the telecommunications sector are the increasing popularity of cellular phones, the installation of telecommunications towers, and advanced services. In addition, since China is the most significant contributor to the entire telecommunications industry, the Asia-Pacific region has made a considerable contribution to the growth of the global market.

  • According to Internet World Stats, a database providing internet users globally, the total world population using the internet by March 31, 2021, was 5,168,780,607. This shows a 65.6% penetration rate of internet usage and a 1,331.9% growth rate from 2000. Out of this, Asia Pacific accounts for almost 53.4% of the internet users.

  • According to India Brand Equity Foundation, India has witnessed a 10-fold market growth in cell phone users from 2011 to September 2021. The pandemic further enhanced the sale of smartphones through online channels.

Due to the unprotected characteristics of the fuse base and the need to replace it frequently after each overload accident, the demand for the fuse base is expected to decrease. This challenge can be challenging to handle because such situations always occur, resulting in recurring expenses in installing fuse bases because it is not a one-time payment in installments. The challenge for the fuse base is adding circuit protection devices to the circuit to help prevent overload current conditions in the electrical system. These trends could curb the global fuse base market during the forecast period.

Fuse bases are either open, fully enclosed, or others. The open fuse base is the most preferred type. The high demand for medium voltage fuse bases due to the continuous construction of the transmission and distribution network and the high fuse replacement capacity is expected to drive the market. The main end-uses of medium voltage fuse bases are utility companies, transformers and substations, power distribution networks, and heavy industries such as oil and gas. The medium voltage fuse base mainly uses a current limiting function, motor circuit protection, and backup to prevent predetermined current. These fuse bases account for a large part of the total market size.

North America dominates the global market for fuse base and is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period. The adoption of advanced technology and renewable power by large companies in the region can produce sufficient growth opportunities for the market. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, the region showed year-on-year growth in total renewable capacity addition of over 8%. The U.S. government is also taking measures to enhance the offshore wind power capacity of the country.

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE FUSE BASE MARKET

The fuse base market size is expected to recover quickly from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The market was affected due to lower telecom tower installations and infrastructure development during the pandemic. However, the rise in renewable power development and the growing requirement for telecom and internet facilities are anticipated to enhance demand.

  • According to the International Finance Corporation by the World Bank Group, the telecom tower construction was affected due to supply chain disruptions. Independent tower companies such as Helios Towers and American Towers suffered almost -19% and -21% performance reductions due to the pandemic, respectively.

  • In 2020, IRENA announced the world's total renewable capacity as almost 2,802,004 MW, portraying a year-on-year growth of over 10%.

As the renewable power and internet demand is growing due to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, the demand for a fuse base is anticipated to grow.

KEY INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENTS

  • In September 2018, Littlefuse launched a new PICO 242 series hazardous area barrier network fuses, preventing fires and explosions in critical situations. The fuse base used in the series can prevent the circuit from overheating, thereby minimizing the risk of a short circuit. The company intends to strengthen its product portfolio through such developments and releases.

  • In November 2018, Schurter launched a new series of 6.3 × 32 mm ceramic fuses, called SUTH, which can operate at high rated currents from 10 A to 50 A. The new Schurter SUTH fuse base is designed for a single-phase and can withstand high inrush currents. Schurter plans to expand its highly rated current fuse products portfolio to achieve a wide range of applications.
