Geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) is a fabric type of material that produces hydraulic barrier. This liner comprises of two layers of geotextile combined with bentonite clay. Bentonites provide low permeability, long-lasting resistance, and high swelling capacity, due to that it makes geosynthetic clay liner an ideal choice over traditional compacted clay liners. Further, as a lining material, it is preferred in canals and wetlands. GCL provides self-sealing, easy installation, and better hydraulic performance, hence, it is mainly used in construction, mining, and upstream oil & gas exploration sites.

The need for geosynthetic clay liners is rising at its rapid pace owing to increasing its use in various applications such as transportation facilities, storage tanks, canals, surface impoundments, and ponds. GCLs utilized as linings to prevent water leakage out of landfills. Further, many governing regulatory bodies have instructed the use of these liners in landfills and containment. Also, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has placed numerous legislations that dynamically standardize landfill construction. Hence, increasing use of GCLs in various applications will surge the growth of geosynthetic clay liner market.

The chances of getting punctured in the course of or after installation can lose the hydraulic performance of GCLs. Further loss of hydraulic integrity and bentonite thinning in the future is anticipated to hamper the market growth.
