An abrasive is often a mineral or ceramic, generally is employed to give the product a finished look by rubbing. Friction causes the wearing out of the rough or uneven surface and gives the object a smooth, reflective, and soft finish. The ceramics that are used to incise, pulverize, and clean other softer materials are known as abrasives. Glass abrasives are small particles of glass used to shape and give a finishing look to the object. Glass abrasives are used in drilling, grinding, cutting, polishing, sharpening, buffing, sanding, and lapping. Extremely fine rouge powder of glass is commonly used for grinding glass and even in jewellery making to give the ornaments a high reflective polish.

The automotive segment is expected to show highest growth attributed to the rising disposable income and increase in the demand for vehicles from countries like Russia, Germany, China, India, and others. The increasing demand for glass abrasives from automotive and construction for drilling, sharpening, and polishing, deburring, sizing, and repairing the parts of the engines and machines is expected to drive the market demand.

However, health hazards associated with the use of glass abrasives which contain silica which is known to be carcinogenic in nature is expected to limit the market growth.
