Glycine is a non-essential amino acid naturally found in a variety of protein-rich foods such as fish, legumes, dairy, meat, etc. It is colorless in appearance and sweet in taste. Commercially, glycine is manufactured by the reaction of chloroacetic acid with ammonia or the Strecker amino acid synthesis route. The latter manufacturing process is prominently used in the US & Japan.

Glycine has wide adoption in the pharmaceutical industry. It is effectively used for treating diseases like schizophrenia, sleep disorder, stroke, metabolic syndrome along with rare inherited metabolic disorders. Also, it is also used for memory enhancement and treat leg ulcers and heal wounds. It also helps reduce anxiety. Anxiety disorder is rapidly increasing across various sections of society especially amongst the youths. The number of people taking medication for anxiety has significantly gone up. As per the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, anxiety has affected around 40 million adults aged 18 or old in the US alone. Only 36.9% of those suffering from anxiety receive treatment. The rising awareness for proper treatment is expected to increase this number. As a result, the demand for inexpensive glycine is also expected to increase.

However, glycine manufacturing is exposed to various regulations such as Good Manufacturing Practices established by US food & drug department. Also, manufacturers have to maintain sufficient purity for their product to comply with USP (United States Pharmacopeia), BP, EP, and Japan Food Additive standards. Moreover, the strong presence of effective substitutes for specific applications restricts market growth.

Regional Analysis:

On a geographical basis, the glycine market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. North America & Europe account for lion’s share in the global glycine market closely followed by Asia-Pacific. North America is expected to grow moderately over the forecast period owing to steady growth in the pharmaceutical industry. Europe is also expected to follow a similar trend. Feed and Food Additive application is expected to create lucrative growth opportunities over the forecast period due to the increasing consumption of ready-to-eat food along with increasing consumption of meat. Asia-Pacific is poised to be the fastest-growing market on the back of countries like China & India.

China is one of the largest manufacturers of glycine and exports large quantities of the same to the other parts of the World. The growth in Middle East & Africa is expected to be influenced by the market in GCC countries. Further, with the increasing penetration of the pharmaceutical industry in poor countries of Africa is expected to increase the demand for glycine in the region. Brazil & Mexico account for more than half of the glycine consumption of Latin America. The social & political instability in the Latin America region is expected to result in low consumption of glycine over the forecast period. However, with the improvement in these conditions, glycine demand is expected to increase slowly.
