Report Format: PDF | Published Date: Ongoing | Report ID: FBI101254 | Status : Pipeline

Bladder refers to the balloon-shaped hollow muscles situated in the middle of the pelvis, which gets expanded when it is filled with urine and contracted when it gets empty. Bladder pain can affect both males and females due to various reasons. Urinary tract infections are the major reasons for bladder pain. In certain chronic cases, long term bladder pain can be due to Interstitial Cystitis (IC) or Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS). Common symptoms of bladder pain syndrome include mild to severe pain, the urgency to urinate, increased urination frequency, and others.

Current treatment of bladder pain includes surgery and medication. Drugs like pentosan polysulfate sodium, antihistamine hydroxyzine, antidepressant amitriptyline, and others are commonly used for the treatment of bladder pain. Minimal invasive surgical procedures such as bladder instillation, bladder distention, and others are performed for the treatment of bladder pain.

Limited treatment options and rising prevalence of bladder pain has increased the number of a clinical study for bladder pain treatment. Various pharmaceutical companies and research institutes have been focusing on studying and developing new treatment options for bladder pain. For instance; ASP6294, which is being studied by Astellas Pharma Inc., is currently in phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of bladder pain.

At present, around 47% of the pipeline candidates for bladder pain are in phase 2 clinical stage. More than half of the studies are sponsored by research institutes.
