The cold flow improvers are the substances used with conventional fuels to avoid gelling problem during low temperatures. At low temperatures the fuel cools down towards its cloud point temperature, this leads to the paraffin content of fuel coming and forming clusters with other similar suspensions to clog the fuel filter which shuts down the engine. Therefore, the cold flow improvers are used as they enhance the performance of the fuels at low temperature by adding wax dispersant which avoids forming of significant clog suspensions, anti-settling agents which do not allow the formed particles to settle down, and a wax modifier which prevents the coming together of the wax crystals. The cold flow improvers are increasingly being used in and the automotive, aviation aerospace and the marine sectors. Different types of cold flow improvers are used depending upon the base oil.

On the basis of type, global cold flow improvers market can be segmented into ethylene-vinyl acetate, polyalpha olefin, polyalkyl methacrylate and other. The property of wax deposition inhibition at low temperatures in heavy and light vehicle engines is the factor which will be ethylene-vinyl acetate hold a more significant market share as compared to other counterparts. Based on application, the global cold flow improvers market can be segmented into diesel, aviation fuel, and lubricating oil. The diesel segment is set to dominate the market in the forecast period owing to the rise in sales of automobiles.

On the basis of the end-user, the global cold flow improvers market can be segmented into automotive, commercial aviation, marine, defense, and others. The automotive segment is the dominant segment and will continue to grow during the given forecast period. The rise in disposable income has seen an increase in investment in the purchase of automobiles.

The key market driver for the global cold flow improvers market is the increase in the demand and sales of automobiles all over the world. The air traffic has also increased in recent years due to the rise in disposable income. These factors together act as market drivers for the global cold flow improvers market.

Key market restraint for the global cold flow improvers market is the availability of other substitute fuels, which are economical and also have fewer carbon emissions. These fuels, therefore, don not face any problem during working at low temperature.

Regional Analysis

The global cold flow improvers market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. The Asia Pacific has been the dominant region in the global cold flow improvers market followed by Europe and North America. Asia Pacific region has seen the maximum growth in the sales of automobiles. There has also been an increase in the number of air passenger in recent years due to the increase in disposable income. The growing urbanization in the region, mainly in countries like India and China, has been the driving factor in the region. In North America and Europe, the temperature is low all-round the year as compared to other regions. The automobile sales in these two regions have seen growth, which has created opportunities for the global cold flow improvers market. The rising passenger traffic has been the driving factor for the growth of the global cold flow improvers market in the Latin America region.

Key Industry Developments

  • In May 2019, In collaboration with petroleum oil and additive industries, Germany’s biodiesel quality management association has launched a new no harm test for the cold flow improvers which will ensure no negative interactions between blended biodiesel and diesel fuel.
  • In June 2019, Purify Fuel and Solvay’s developed a nanotechnology-based fuel additive blend to improve the diesel fuel by purifying it, increasing the efficiency, reduce the carbon emissions by 35-55% and power output. The additive is to be known as a nan02 fuel additive.
  • In June 2019, The Lubrizol Corporation announced an exclusive partnership with Corbion Biotech, which will bring high stability high oleic algae oil to the personal care and cosmetics market. Corbion is a leader in innovative bio-based solutions, and Lubrizol is a company dealing with various products for customers.
