Critical care nutritional products refer to the products used to facilitate the administration of optimal and safe nutrition to patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), using a practice based on evidence. Critical care nutritional products are crucial because early nutrition therapy may decrease the severity of the disease, reduce complications, decrease the length of stay in the intensive care unit, decrease mortality rates and improve patient outcomes. Critical care nutritional products have various routes of administration such as oral, enteral and parenteral.

Critical care nutritional products are especially important for patients undergoing surgery in order to prevent starvation, providing adequate nutrition and to modify the metabolic response to surgical stress. A number of factors such as optimal dose, timing, composition, and advancement rate of nutrition influence the administration of these products during the acute, chronic and recovery phases of the critical illness. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2018, there were an estimated 1,735,350 new cancer cases diagnosed in the U.S., for which treatment using surgery is a common method.

One of the key drivers of the growth in the market is the increasing prevalence of acute and chronic diseases such as cancer for which treatment and management of individual often have to undergo several days of stay at the critical care. The World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA) estimated that every year around 230 million major surgeries take place globally, thus necessitating the proper provision of adequate nutrition in order to improve patient outcomes and also improve the metabolic response to surgeries.

Another factor which adds to the considerable growth of the critical care nutritional products market is the extensive stays at the critical care units, due to increasing instances of trauma and accidents globally, requiring the best possible nutrition administration, leading to faster recoveries.

The factor that is expected to inhibit the growth of the market is the risks associated with the enteral administration of patient infections. Often these risks and complications can be life-threatening for the patients and some of the complications can include aspiration, refeeding syndrome, tube malpositioning or dislodgment, refeeding syndrome and fluid imbalances amongst others.
