Intrathecal pumps refer to medical devices which are used via an intrathecal catheter to deliver medication right into the intrathecal space. The intrathecal space is the gap between the spinal cord and the protective sheath surrounding the spinal cord. Intrathecal pumps are small pumps surgically placed under the skin for the drug to be directly delivered into the pain area. This leads to a reduction in the number of pain medications used, relieve chronic pain conditions, prevention of the pain signals from being perceived by the brain and relieve from the pain that is resistant to opioids.

Before the installation of a permanent pump, a trial is carried out to see if the trial pump reduced the pain by 50% and the procedure is reversible in terms of nature. Intrathecal pumps are especially useful for patients who have not been benefited from conservative pain management therapies. Some of the illnesses for which intrathecal pumps are effective includes cancer, failed back surgery syndrome, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, arachnoiditis, and chronic pancreatitis. According to the estimates of The American Cancer Society, there were 1,735,350 new cancer cases diagnosed in the U.S. in 2018. This market is expected to experience considerable growth due to the technological advancements in the intrathecal pumps leading to greater safety and greater efficiency in the administration of medication.

One of the key drivers of the market growth of the global intrathecal pumps is the increasing prevalence of acute and chronic diseases such as various types of cancers and other pain-causing disorders such as failed back surgery syndrome where the individual faces continual and severe back pain. One of the other driving factors for this market is the administration of accurate medication dosages, which often leads to lesser utilization of pain medication. A proportion of patients often have pain that does not respond to opioids, and intrathecal pumps are best suited for these individuals. These are the factors that are contributing to the considerable growth of the market.

The factor that is expected to inhibit the growth of the market is the certain risks associated with intrathecal pumps products. For instance, due to malfunctions of the intrathecal pumps, there can be scenarios where there is an overdosage or under dosage of medication administered. There can be certain adverse effects due to an infected intrathecal pump, where the whole system has to be removed.

Regional Analysis

The global Intrathecal Pumps market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. North America followed by Europe are the two largest markets for intrathecal pumps at present and are expected to account for a large proportion of the market in the forecast period as well. North America accounts for the highest share of the market due to the high prevalence of cancers and other associated diseases such as chronic back pain requiring the administration of pain medication and the high healthcare expenditure. In the Asia Pacific region, Japan is expected to provide the largest market opportunity. This is because of the increased usage of baclofen in intrathecal pumps in the country and the favorable reimbursement policies towards intrathecal pumps.
