Intumescent coating expands in the presence of heat, subsequently increasing the time before the substrate starts to combust or melt. The swelling of the coating results in an increase in volume and decrease in density, effectively acting as a flame retardant. Hence it is typically used for fire protection. Intumescent coatings are usually applied to substrates such as steel, wood, and iron. The coating for steel application must be approved in standardized fire tests, which are compiled by the international standardization bodies. The regulations on fire & safety implemented by government bodies is expected to grow the demand for intumescent coating.

The key market driver for the global intumescent coating market is the increasing awareness and regulations regarding fire safety. The implementation of various regulations, codes, and fire safety standards by various governments is expected to act as the market driver for the intumescent coatings market.

Key market restraint for the global intumescent coating market is the high cost of intumescent coatings. Due to the high cost of intumescent coatings, people prefer low cost fire protection techniques. Low cost methods such as cementitious coatings are used which are not as reliable and efficient as intumescent coatings.
