Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) is the organic compound and also known as detergent alkylate. The kerosene, n-paraffins, and benzeneare used to produce linear alkylbenzene. LAB removes oil and fatty soil absorbed into the fabric and textile. Furthermore, the linear alkylbenzene exhibits optimum optical transparency, high flash point, low radioactive impurities, and high light yield, due to that it is also utilized in neutrino detectors. It is mainly used for the production of linear alkylbenzene sulphonic acid (LABSA) or linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), which is used in laundry detergents, light-duty dishwashing liquids, industrial cleaners, and household cleaners applications.

The rising demand for linear alkylbenzene in the linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) application will fuel the market growth. LAS is a surfactant and derived from linear alkylbenzene. It can be easily bio-degradable which makes it a preferred choice over dodecylbenzene sulfonates. In addition, the growth of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates is also attributed to its low cost and versatility nature. Further, it is also considered as the safest anionic surfactant from the environmental and human health point of view. The rising consumer need for light-duty dishwashing liquids, heavy-duty laundry liquids, and laundry powders will fuel the demand for linear alkylbenzene sulfonates. This further aid to surge the growth for the linear alkylbenzene market.

However, linear alkylbenzene is produced from petrochemicals which also include benzene. Hence, fluctuation in the petrochemicals prices will directly impact the overall price of the linear alkylbenzene, which may further restrict the market growth.

Regional Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) Market Analysis:

The high adoption of linear alkylbenzene can be seen in the Asia Pacific and this region is expected to witness the highest growth during the forecast period. The growth is due to the rising demand for laundry detergent in the residential sector. Further, India is one of the leading contributor to produce soaps and detergents. This aids to fuel the growth of the linear alkylbenzene market. In Europe, the growth is attributed to the increasing product demand in the non-surfactant application. The rising industrial sector in North America has surged the demand for non-surfactant applications in the region. The Middle East & Africa and Latin America will witness significant growth, owing to the rising demand for LAS in the industrial and household cleaners.

Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) Industry Developments

  • In April 2018, CEPSA has installed Detal technology at its San Roque chemical plant. This technology is used for the production of linear alkylbenzene (LAB) and has a production capacity of 200,000 to 250,000 tons per annum. In this operation, the company has invested over US$ 113 million. Hence, this new installation will serve the African market.

  • In December 2018, ADNOC and CEPSA have entered into an agreement to develop a Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant in the Ruwais Derivatives Park. In this new plant, the companies have invested worth US$ 45 billion. The plant has a production capacity of 225,000 metric tons per annum. This development will aid to enable the creation of several new value chains and petrochemical activities.

  • In March 2016, LABIX Company Limited has started the linear alkylbenzene production in Chonburi Province, Thailand, with a capacity of 100,000 tons a year. The company is formed from the joint venture of Thai Oil Public Company Limited and MITSUI & CO., LTD. This will further help the company to meet the consumer requirements and to expand its business in Southeast Asia.
