Reclosers are capable of detecting the trouble in the electric line, automatically and remove the fault in the electrical line. The recloser resets the temporary problem automatically and restores electric power. In case of trouble re-occurrence of more than three times, the recloser shuts off the power to prevent the line from any accident. Reclosers are designed to handle a short close-open duty cycle, where electrical engineers can optionally configure the number of attempted close operations before transitioning to a lockout stage. Reclosers are often used as a key component in a smart grid, as they are effectively computer-controlled switchgear, which can be remotely operated and interrogated using SCADA or other communications. Reclosers are used in numerous applications like Smart-Grid distribution network automation, substation circuit breakers, single-phase laterals, and fire risk mitigation.

Based on the phase, the market is segmented into single-phase, three-phase, and others. The three-phase recloser is expected to lead the market as it is mostly used in the transmission and distribution sector. Also, increasing investment in grid T&D projects will boost the growth of the three-phase recloser.

Based on the control, the market is segmented into electric, hydraulic, and others. The electric segment is expected to hold the market, owing to its operational features, such as high feasibility, reliability, and accuracy in operation. In the electric segment, the majority of faults such as lightning strikes, surges, or foreign objects come in contact with the distribution line and cause disturbances, and thereby recloser is majorly required in T&D lines.

Based on the interruption- type, the market is segmented into oil and vacuum. The vacuum type leads the market due to its features such as arc quenching property, reliability, economical, and environment friendly. Oil type, when used in power stations and feeders, requires high maintenance.

The key driver of this market is the increasing distribution automation can improve speed, cost, and accuracy of several key distribution processes, including fault detection, feeder switching, and voltage monitoring and control. Other market drivers include an increase in the need for energy due to industrialization and urbanization, and increasing demand for power encourages building more transmission & distribution networks resulting in the adoption of reclosers.

The key restraint for the market is a failure to maintain recloser can result in loss of services that are required to operate the network safely. This prevents the safe and efficient operation of the network. Hence, well-skilled labor is required to operate it. Other factors that restraint the market are longer de-ionization time and high maintenance cost.

Key Players Covered:

Some of the major companies in the medium voltage recloser market are ABB, Eaton, Schneider Electric, Siemens, S&C Electric Company, G&W Electric Co., NOJA Power, GE, Solomon Corporation, Arteche, and Ergon Energy.

Regional Analysis:

The global medium voltage recloser market is studied across different regions like North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. In North America, an increase in the rate of industrialization and strengthening the grid infrastructure with the development of transmission and distribution lines will lead to the growth of the market. In Europe, the advanced technology of automation and growth of power distribution networks will fuel the growth of reclosers in countries like the UK, Germany, and Russia. In the Asia Pacific region, rapid industrialization, expansion of transmission and distribution network, and an increase in the need for energy will contribute to the growth of the market. In the Middle East & Africa, UAE plans for New Clean Energy Target by 2050 stating that 50 percent of its energy to come from renewable sources by 2050. Thus, growing renewable power generation will provide several opportunities for the medium voltage recloser market.

Key Industry Developments

  • In January 2020, Siemens introduced a new compact modular recloser (CMR) is a cost-effective, reduced-maintenance alternative to single-phase, oil-filled reclosers. It integrates the switch unit, control, and voltage power source into a single-insulated epoxy housing, for greater reliability and ease of installation.

  • In April 2018, G&W Electric and GE’s Grid Solutions collaborated on the development of a new integrated recloser solution. G&W’s Viper-ST Recloser has been designed and tested to work seamlessly with GE’s new Multilin R650 recloser control. It delivers comprehensive performance in protection, monitoring control, automatic network configuration, and communications.
