Mobile power plants are usually thermal electric type power plants, in which all the constituent equipment are mounted on a transport vehicle. These are used across applications requiring emergency power or in cases where the power need is temporary. These are mounted on a truck or tracked vehicle, on one or more trailers, on a self-propelled chassis, or a railroad flatcar. Diesel and gas turbines are usually used as the primary motors for mobile power plants. In addition to the electric generator and primary motor, the equipment also includes the switching apparatus, a complete cable network, a control console, automation, and signaling systems, auxiliary equipment, and spare parts. These power plants offer flexible and de-centralized power generation with a fast supply of electricity to areas with limited infrastructure. These are used in case of occurrence of a natural hazard such as earthquake or floods. Other applications of these are to provide power for exploratory drilling rigs, machinery used in railroad construction and logging operations, and mobile film projectors. These serve as a primary power source at a location far away from central power transmission lines. They also serve as standby sources where other power is ordinarily available.

Based on fuel type, the global mobile power plant market can be segmented into natural gas/LNG and diesel. Owing to the advantages of lower harmful emissions and global drift towards natural gas over diesel, the natural gas segment is expected to dominate the market over the forecast period.

Based on capacity the market can be segmented into 1-10MW, 10-20MW, and Above 20 MW. The Above 20 MW segment will dominate the market as most of the applications where mobile power plants are used have a high power demand and accordingly, the installations are carried out.

Based on application the market can be segmented into oil & gas, emergency power, remote area electrification, and others. Currently, the mobile power plants are majorly used as emergency power back up systems as these take little time for installation and are capable of fulfilling power demand for a stipulated period. Therefore the emergency power segment is expected to hold a lion's share in the market.

The major market driver for the global mobile power plant market is the growing power demand all over the world owing to increased population and expansion of application areas of power such as air conditioning. Increased population has led to increased exploration activities and construction activities in urban areas leading to higher demand for mobile power plants. Also, the rural electrification targets, natural hazards, and cases that require emergency power will drive the adoption of mobile power plants.

Key market restraint for the global mobile power plant market is the unavailability of fuels to operate the mobile power plants or lack of establishing a connection with the grid to meet the specific requirements of a given project. Also, the difficulties faced in accessing the difficult locations due to lack of proper connectivity or transportation can hinder the growth.

Key Players Covered:

  • Some of the notable players in the global mobile power plant market include GE, APR Energy, Siemens, PW Power Systems, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., METKA, MAPNA Group, Vericor Power Systems LLC, Kornido Energy, and Caterpillar Energy Solutions.

Regional Analysis:

The global Mobile power plant market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. Asia Pacific region is set to dominate the mobile power plant market in the coming years owing to the rise in electrification projects, rise in oil and gas activities, and construction activities that require power for a specific period. The Middle East and Africa are also expected to witness a healthy investment for mobile power plants owing to rising oil and gas activities and electrification targets in the developing nations in the African region. In Europe and North America the construction, emergency power, and oil and gas activities are expected to be the major contributors to the market growth. Shale gas boom in North America and increasing demand for power with construction activities at locations where established power lines don’t reach will fuel the investments for mobile power plants.

Key Industry Developments

  • In September 2020, Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda R&D Co., Ltd. Came together to develop a mobile power generation/output system—Moving e—that will comprise Toyota’s CHARGING STATION fuel cell bus, Honda’s Power Exporter 9000 portable external power output device, two types of Honda’s portable batteries: LiB-AID E500 and Honda Mobile Power Pack (MPP) and Honda Mobile Power Pack Charge & Supply Concept charger/discharger for MPP.  Further, the effectiveness will be checked with collaborating with municipalities fulfilling the required conditions.

  • In March 2019, Siemens received the first order for its SGT-A45 mobile unit from Bayat Power, a company of The Bayat Group. The unique offering of the company would be combined with Bayat Power's extensive experience in developing infrastructure in Afghanistan. This will enable the first new gas-fired power plant in Afghanistan in over 40 years.
