Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) is the combination of perfluoromethylvinylether and tetrafluoroethylene. It provides resistance to extreme chemical environments and high temperatures up to 327°C (621°F). The perfluoroelastomer is resistant to almost all chemicals including sodium hydroxide, alkalines, nitric acid, esters, ketones, fuels, ethylene diamine, alcohols, and hot water. It also offers resistance to weather or climatic conditions, ozone and steam. Additionally, it has very low gas permeability. Perfluoroelastomer is mainly utilized in sealing and to produce gaskets, O-rings, complex molded parts, and specialty seals. It finds application in various industries such as oil & gas, aerospace, and chemical.

The perfluoroelastomer is used to provide low contamination and chemical resistance in food applications where FDA compliance is required. The seal failure from excess swelling, decomposition, and embrittlement can cause unscheduled contamination in the pharmaceutical products. In such instances perfluoroelastomer protects the packed products from contamination. The FFKM is used as a substitute for seal material, when the standard fitted seal material is not chemically compatible with the process media. In addition, it is suitable for water for Injection (WFI) systems and Steam-in-Place (SIP) cleaning processes. These positive factors of FFKM will provide a lucrative growth to the market.

However, perfluoroelastomer has several beneficial properties including resistance to extreme high temperatures and many chemicals, and has high production cost which makes it expensive. This reduces the demand for the product in lost cost applications. Hence, it is anticipated to hinder the market growth.
