Rainwater Harvesting is the process of collecting rainwater from surfaces on which rain falls, filtering it and storing it for multiple uses. Rainwater harvesting puts the supply of water back to normal levels. It is the collection and storage of water from surfaces that rain has fallen upon. Rainwater harvesting is an innovative technique utilized to harvest rainwater from roofs and other above surfaces to be stored for later use. Rain harvested water can be used for garden and crop irrigation, watering livestock, laundry, and flushing toilets. Rainwater can be harvested and used by those in the city who have running city water just as well as it can be used by those in more rural towns where the adequate water supply may be unavailable. There are two kinds of rainwater harvesting methods: Rooftop-based rainwater harvesting and surface-based rainwater harvesting. The benefits of rainwater harvesting include financial as well as resource savings.

Based on the type, the market is segmented into a rain barrel system, wet system, dry system, and green roof system. Rain barrel system leads the market as it helps to reduce the flow of storm runoff. When it rains, runoff picks up soil, fertilizer, oil, pesticides, and other contaminants from hard surfaces and landscapes. Other advantages include, it also saves money, promotes plant and soil health, and conserve water.

Based on the harvesting method, the market is segmented into the above-ground harvesting method and underground harvesting method. Above-ground harvesting leads the market as the tanks are generally cheaper and easier to install than underground systems. It has an added advantage; the people who don’t own the land they live on can move the tank (flexible location).

Based on the installation, the market is segmented into industrial, residential, agricultural, and commercial. Agricultural segment leads the market as it is performed everywhere around the globe for the cultivation of crops by farmers, and rainwater harvesting plays a huge advantage in this segment. It makes it easier for a farmer for the watering of the crops and agricultural fields. Also, in the absence of groundwater, rainwater harvesting is used to harvest the crops in the fields.

The factors driving the growth of the global rainwater harvesting system market can be attributed to the increasing awareness among consumers towards decreasing freshwater volume across the geographies. The growing demand for rainwater harvesting systems from farmers and big cultivars is also one of the key driving factors for the growth of the global rainwater harvesting system market. The reason for this increased demand from agriculturalists is the high requirement of water for irrigation that is a necessity for the maintenance of crop yield and to tackle climate calamities such as drought. Therefore, harvesting rainwater and storing it for future use has become a reliable option for them.

The key market restraint is the growing wastewater treatment plants that are used to remove contaminants from wastewater or sewage and convert it into an effluent that can be returned to the water cycle with minimum impact on the environment or directly reused.  Other market restraints are high costs of installing a rainwater harvesting system that cannot be afforded by poor farmers. Furthermore, the high maintenance cost is required for the smooth functioning of the rainwater harvesting system.

Regional Analysis:

The global rainwater harvesting market is studied across different regions like North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. In North America, the easy installation and customization process of the rainwater harvesting system has fueled its demand in the region. Also, due to the rise in the population in countries like the U.S and Canada, there is a rise in the demand for water. In Europe, owing to maximum manufacturing companies present in countries like the U.K and Germany, which is the factor driving the growth of the market. Also, the rising importance of rainwater harvesting than groundwater is driving the market. In the Asia Pacific region, due to an increase in the population in countries like India, China, and Malaysia, there is an increase in the need for water for industrial, residential, and commercial applications. Also, agriculture is majorly practiced in India by the farmers, which is a major factor driving the growth of the market. In Middle East Asia, in Lebanon and other countries, water scarcity is increasing day by day, which is fueling the rainwater harvesting market on a large scale. Also, various projects on rainwater harvesting will drive the market in the coming years.

Key Industry Developments

  • In August 2019, due to a six-month dry spell, thunderstorms and showers recently brought respite to a parched Chennai, paved the way for both corporations and residents to harvest water. Tapping this, several Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) structures are being installed across the city.

  • In July 2019, in a bid to tackle the problem of depleting groundwater level, the Uttar Pradesh government was made it mandatory for new residential and commercial buildings to have provisions of rainwater harvesting.
