Silicon dioxide, commonly known as silica is a versatile chemical is a white coloured, solid oxide of silicon. Silica is found in nature and can also be synthesized in laboratory. It is mainly found as fused quartz, fumed silica, silica gel and aerogel. Aerogels are synthetic, ultra-light and permeable material derived from a gel. This is carried out by replacing the liquid component in the gel by gas. Silica aerogels feels like delicate expanded polystyrene on touching.

Increasing demand from end-use sectors like aerospace, oil & gas, chemical and automotive for low-density material with insulating properties shall drive the market. It was preferably used by NASA in Stardust Spacecraft to collect the extra-terrestrial particles and trap the dust particles present aboard. Additionally, increasing use of silica aerogel in imaging devices, light guides, and optical devices shall boost the market growth.

However, the exposure to silica particles and dust can cause silicosis, lung damage and other respiratory diseases which can at times turn out to be fatal. The health risks occurring on exposure to silica shall limit the market growth.
