The global smart irrigation market has witnessed growth in recent years due to increasing awareness about water conservation. Smart Irrigation system uses the latest technologies such as controllers, sensors, sprinkles to improve the coverage of irrigation controllers. The use of the latest technologies such as IoT helps conserve water by adjusting the water levels depending on the moisture content present in the soil.

Smart irrigation system receives local weather data and determines the landscape suitable for watering or not, based on the analysis. Hence, it prevents the waste of energy and water resources. The use of smart irrigation systems also creates the opportunity to conserve water, thereby creating an eco-friendly and sustainable environment.

Among the different watering methods available for agriculture, around 50% of the water is lost due to inefficient use of water. The use of smart irrigation systems helps to improve efficiency by using sensors to detect the watering routines in real-time. In addition, the utility cost of water is expensive, and with the use of smart irrigation controllers, water is conserved thereby reducing the utility cost.

Smart irrigation system is classified on the basis of the control type and the delivery type used for delivering water for irrigation. On the basis of control, the smart irrigation system can be classified into weather-based and soil-based. Both these systems vary on the technical methods used for sensing and transmitting the information. Furthermore, based on the delivery type, the smart irrigation system is classified into surface, sprinklers, trickle, and subsurface.

Weather-based irrigation system, also called ET system, uses water schedules for watering their plants using analytical methods to assess local temperature, humidity, and wind in the region. Soil-based irrigation system uses data drawn from local soil moisture present in the ground and supports the decision-making related to watering schedules for the plants. Soil-based irrigation systems manage the demand for irrigation by using the data available from the sensors that are attached in the ground. These sensors monitor the local soil moisture data and manage the irrigation system.

Key Players Covered:

The key players of global smart irrigation market are Rain Bird Corporation (US), The Toro Company (US), Netafim (Israel), Hunter Industries (US) and HydroPoint (US).

The water shortage situation in different regions across the world has emphasized efficient use of irrigation systems. With rapid urbanization and the increase in the development of smart cities, the demand for efficient irrigation systems is on the rise. For instance, Starlab and other companies have worked together to develop and deploy remote-controlled irrigation systems to manage the water network and control the water network in Poblenou Park Centre, Barcelona.

Agricultural irrigation is one of the major contributors to global agricultural production. To develop the irrigation process in these regions, investment from both public and private companies will help achieve the goals set by United Nations for sustainable development.

The initial investment cost associated with the use of smart irrigation system in farming is comparatively high than traditional method. This acts as one of the main barriers responsible for negatively affecting the growth of the target market.

Regional Analysis:

North America is witnessing significant growth in the global smart irrigation system market due to the increasing adoption of the latest agricultural and non-agricultural use technologies. With large farms, these smart irrigation controllers help to irrigate the field with little human intervention.

Asia Pacific region is anticipated to witness substantial growth in the foreseeable future due to the increasing awareness about new technologies and the increasing demand for water conservation; growing needs to develop sustainable irrigation solutions for future generations. The lack of adequate rainfall in recent years and the increasing demand for monitoring the water requirements also acts as a major factor which is expected to drive the growth of smart irrigation market in this region.
