A superheater is a device that is used to convert saturated steam (wet steam) into superheated steam (dry steam). These devices are used in steam turbines for electricity generation, steam reforming, and also in steam engines. The global superheater market is expected to witness significant growth due to the growing steam boilers market and the increasing construction of power plants. The superheater is used in various industries and power stations like thermal power stations, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals; therefore the growth of these industries will indirectly drive the superheaters market growth. Another factor that can lead to more demand of superheaters in the coming years are raid urbanization, which increases electricity demand in urban locations. Also, the superheater market will witness growth due to an increase in the number of industries producing large quantities of superheated steam to generate electricity in large amounts for different reasons, for example, district heating.

Based on type, the global superheater market can be segmented radiant, convection, and combined superheater. Radiant superheaters are expected to lead the market owing to operational advantages, which include reduction of load on boilers by 50% and reduction in the heat of fuel gas. These help in better efficiency of the overall system. Based on the application, the market can be segmented into power generation, industrial, oil & gas, and others. The power generation sector is expected to lead the market owing to rising electricity demand, and electricity production through thermal power plants.

The key market driver for the global superheater market is the increasing demand for electricity that leads to a more efficient generation from existing thermal power plants. Other factors that drive the growth of the market are increasing industrialization, which needs electricity to operate, the introduction of new systems that promote the use of superheaters, and the operational advantages like efficiency boost, which is brought in by superheater installation.

The market restraint for the global superheater market is the increasing penetration of renewables in the field of power generation. The other restraint that could hinder the market growth is the steps by governments of various countries to shut down thermal power plants to curb carbon emissions and achieve green energy targets.

Key Players Covered:

Some of the key players in superheater include Alfa Laval, Chromalox, KNM Group Berhad, Maarky Thermal Systems, Optimus Industries LLP, Sussman Electric Boilers, UnitBirwelco, Watlow, Vapor Power International, Sandvik, and Neotech Energy Systems Private Limited.

Regional Analysis:

The global superheater market is studied across five different regions, namely Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa. During the forecast period, Asia Pacific is expected to lead the market, with China and India being the dominant players in the region. China and India have been estimated to hold nearly 70% of all the proposed thermal power capacity addition during the forecast period, boosting the market growth as superheaters are to be installed in power generation plants. In Europe, the rise in the superheater market is expected with the expansion of various industries using superheaters like the district heating industry, food and beverage industry, and the textile industry. In North America, the market has been estimated to stay strong during the forecast period due to the developed infrastructure, more power consumption, and the presence of key market players. The U.S. will lead the region with the introduction of new power plants and district heating systems. In Latin America and MEA, the expanding power industry and refining sector posses growth opportunities for the market.

Key Industry Developments

  • In October 2014, Metso supplied an innovative superheater corrosion management solution to TAURON Cieplo’s Tychy CHP plant in Poland, which includes a Metso Corrored Analyzer and a DNA Corrosion Manager application. Metso and Valmet have created an innovative solution that provides more information about what takes place inside the boiler. Metso Corrored Analyzer, with its chlorine measurement capability, provides online information about the furnace’s atmosphere. DNA Corrosion Manager provides online information about the corrosion rate and predicts the lifetime of the superheaters.

  • In July 2017, BHEL emerged with ultra super-critical boilers, which used superheaters and plants with these boilers can achieve higher efficiency than that of plants with supercritical boilers. The power plant design was made to withstand 300Kg/cm2, which was earlier used as 150Kg/cm2.
