The yaw system is the component used in wind turbines to direct the wind turbine rotor toward the wind. This system plays a major role in rotating the nacelle of the wind turbine around the tower axis. The positioning and optimal orientation of the nacelle of a windmill plant are to generate the maximum amount of energy from wind. The core functions of the yaw system include wind wheel protection and automatic untwisting of a turbine wheel. The system is consists of a yaw bearing, yaw brakes, and multiple yaw drives.

Based on the type, the market is segmented into active yaw systems and passive yaw systems. Among these, the active yaw system is majorly used due to its prominent importance in improving power generation that further extends the service life of turbines. The active yaw systems are equipped with a torque-producing device that can rotate the wind turbine's nacelle against the stationary tower. The various components used in active yaw systems include a means of rotatable connection, a means of active variation, a means of restricting the rotation, and a control system to process the signal. However, the passive yaw systems use wind force to adjust the orientation of the wind turbine rotor into the wind.

Based on the application, the market is segmented into wind energy, water conservancy project, and others. Wind energy dominates the market and is expected to grow during the forecast period. According to IRENA, Wind expansion has almost doubled to 111GW in 2020 compared to 58GW in 2019. China contributed about 72 GW of new capacity, followed by the U.S. which contributed 14 GW. The water conservancy project involves the preservation, control, and development of water resources.

The major market driver for the yaw system market is the rise in awareness about the usage of renewable energy. In addition, increased government initiatives to explore wind energy sources and an increase in demand for power consumption are also driving the global yaw system market forward. Further, an increase in demand for wind energy is expected to propel the market forward.

The factor that is expected to inhibit the growth of the market is the high cost of installation associated with the system. Heavy investment in the manufacturing of the system is limiting the growth of the market.

Key Players Covered:

Some of the major companies that are present in the yaw system market are Siemens, Svendborg Brakes, Seaglet Co., Ltd, Hydratech Industries, Kor-Pak Corporation, Eaton, SIBRE Siegerland Bremsen GmbH, ZOLLERN GmbH & Co. KG, Grede Holding LLC, Bonfiglioli, ANTEC, NGC Group, Inc., and Altra Industrial Motion.

Regional Analysis:

The yaw system market has been studied across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. The Asia Pacific is expected to dominate the market, owing to its high requirement of wind power capacity and increase in urbanization & industrialization in countries such as China and India. China contributes to the largest share in the market due to the number of water conservancy projects in the region. The Altash Water Conservancy Project is the largest water conservancy project in China located in Xinjiang. The purpose of the project is to control the flood and generate power in the region. India is among the emerging markets for the yaw system market. MGNREGA is one of the main forces that is driving water conservation efforts across rural India.

The North American market is expected to contribute notably to the global market. In North America, the U.S. is expected to drive the market owing to the presence of major wind turbine manufacturers such as GE and Vestas in the region.  Europe is another major market for the yaw system market. In Europe, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy is the leading offshore wind turbine manufacturer. In 2020, the Spanish-based company is operating about 3,674 turbines which generate 16.9 gigawatts of electricity.
