AC adapters convert a higher-voltage alternating current to a lower-voltage direct current for use with devices that require a relatively constant voltage. Direct current is also required to recharge batteries, making AC adapters essential for electronic devices like laptops and cell phones. AC adapter is an external power supply used with devices that run on batteries or have no other power source. It helps reduce the size of a laptop computer by alleviating the need for a standard-sized power supply. AC adapter is made up of a central unit which draws power from an AC outlet. It then converts the power to DC that is used by the computer, and a second cord that plugs into the computer. There are several advantages of AC adapter like; safety, heat reduction, electronic noise reduction, weight and size reduction, ease of replacement and configuration versatility.

Based on the voltage, the market is segmented into three types, like 100V to 120V, 200V to 240V, and 110V to 240V. 100V to 120V leads the market, but later on, with the introduction of switched-mode supply, AC adapters, which are capable of working with any voltage range starting from 100V to 240V, became very much popular and is used in various types of applications in the smartphone, laptop, and smartwatch.

Based on the application, the market is segmented as, smartphone, laptop, tablet, feature phone, smartwatch, and others. The laptop and tablet segment is projected to lead the market during the forecast period as they are majorly used to charge these electronic devices. They are also used to change the AC power from the electrical outlet into a particular type of voltage or power that an electronic device needs to work.

The key market driver of this market is increasing consumer preference and adoption of smartphones, laptops, and tablets, which will boost the use of AC adapter. Other market drivers are; increasing demand for fast charging and growing demand for enhanced functionalities in smartphones.

The key market restraint for the availability of counterfeit USB chargers like USB-A, USB-B, etc., which can restrict the uses and applications of the AC adapter market. Other restraints that hold the growth of AC adapter market includes leakage in the current during the charging due to the wear and tear of the internal circuit in the adapter.

Key Industry Developments

  • In July 2019, the technology behind recharging was changing in AC adapters. Silicon is a mature technology in this field, but manufacturers now are considering silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) options to achieve greater efficiencies.

  • In December 2015, Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. announced the development of the world’s smallest, most efficient AC adapter, which uses gallium nitride (GaN), high electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) power devices for super-fast charging of smartphones and other mobile electronics. It has low dynamic resistance GaN-HEMT as the switching element, which is heavily affected by low-loss, to develop the world's smallest and most efficient AC adapter.
