The rear occupant alert system, also known as the back seat reminder system, is an automated vehicle alert system utilized primarily in passenger and light commercial vehicles to detect the occupants' presence in the rear seat. The system employs various sensors and devices to detect motion and provide visual & auditory warnings to reduce accidents.

The system works on door logic, which tracks the opening and closing of the rear door and determines if someone is left inside the car. Additionally, an advanced version of the system utilizes sensors such as ultrasonic, pressure sensors, and others. In the advanced version, the system displays the message on the dashboard to check the rear seat while leaving the car. Moreover, the ultrasonic and pressure sensors detect the movements when the car is parked or locked if it detects active movement, the system provides an alert through horn and light flash. If the vehicle is connected to the mobile phone through telematics devices, then the system also sends a message on the mobile phone regarding the detection of movement on the car's rear seat.

Growing child safety concerns among the populace worldwide are expected to boost the market growth over the forecast period. Additionally, government laws and regulations regarding leaving the child unattended in the vehicle are also anticipated to fuel the market growth in upcoming years. According to KidsAndCars.org, there are a total of 20 states in the United States, which have laws that specifically make it illegal to leave a child unattended in an automobile.

According to the National Safety Council, the total number of heatstroke death of children in the year 2020 in the US was 25. Additionally, on average, 38 children under age 15 die each year from heatstroke after being left unattended in a vehicle. Hence, the growing number of children fatalities due to heatstroke is expected to influence the demand for automotive rear occupant alert systems in years to come.

Various Automakers, including Kia, General Motors, Nissan, Subaru, and others, already provide the rear occupant alert system in their different automotive models. Moreover, the inclining automaker's focus on the development of this system is anticipated to create growth opportunities during the forecast period. For instance, in August 2019, Hyundai announced that it would make the rear-seat occupant alert standard by 2022 for child safety. However, the rear-seat occupant alert system is nascent technology; very few automotive are equipped with this system. Hence its low penetration in the automotive industry retrains its growth worldwide.

Market Segmentation:

The automotive rear occupant alert system market is segmented by vehicle type, by sensor type, by sales channel, and by region.

By vehicle type, the market is segmented into passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

The passenger cars segment has dominated the market in 2020 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period.
