Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is an excellent solvent and approved as a green reagent by the U.S. DMC was removed in 2009 from the restricted chemicals list of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Traditionally, DMC was synthesized by reacting phosgene and methanol, but the reaction formed toxic intermediates and byproducts. The process was replaced by a more viable oxidative carbonylation process of carbon monoxide or methanol. Further researches led to the development of a new method in which ethylene carbonate was trans-esterified in the presence of CO2, a greenhouse gas. This research resulted in giving DMC the certification as a green reagent. Dimethyl carbonate is used to manufacture coatings, adhesives, and cleaning agents. Additionally, DMC has found its application as an electrolyte in batteries and as a pharmaceutical intermediate.

The rapid growth of the electronics industry has resulted in a large scale demand for batteries to power the devices.  Li-ion batteries mainly found tremendous traction for powering smartphones and other portable electronics. As DMC is a critical component in the manufacture of these Li-ion batteries, its market is expected to mirror the growth of the Li-ion battery market.

DMC has the capability of absorbing a significant amount of water from the environment, which reduces the efficiency of DMC as an electrolyte. This factor restricts its adoption from smartphone manufacturers who are seeking smaller, lightweight batteries.

Regional Analysis:

The global dimethyl carbonate (DMC) market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. Currently, large scale production of DMC is limited to Asia Pacific, the Middle East & Africa, and Europe, wherein Asia Pacific is the prominent shareholder. The chemical synthesis industry is very large in Asia Pacific, which is expected to fuel the demand for DMC in this region. Demand for DMC in North America has also observed quite a rise after its removal from the VOC list in 2009. The market shall continue to grow during the forecast period with companies such as Tesla, researching about hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The market in Europe shall follow the footsteps of North America with research on DMC being a promising oxygenated fuel coming to the fore.

DMC market in Latin America is in the introductory phase and is expected to show a gradual increase in demand for the product, while the market in the Middle East & Africa is expected to show better performance as the requirements for both electronics and pharmaceuticals in the region is anticipated to rise in the future years.
