Dipropylene glycol (DPG) is a hygroscopic, colorless, odorless liquid and has moderate viscosity. It has comparatively lower volatility and is totally miscible in water. It shows a wider range of solvent properties amongst other glycols. For instance, the capability of dipropylene glycol to dissolve oil like castor oil makes it extremely beneficial for a broad range of applications. The dipropylene glycol include regular grade and a high purity grade type having little odor. Dipropylene glycol is used as a plasticizer, solvent, intermediate in commercial chemical reactions, and polymerization chain initiator. Its low toxicity and high solubility make it an ultimate additive for perfumes and personal care products like skin and hair care products. Also, it is a commonly used ingredient in business fog fluid, used in entertainment and film industry fog machines. The implementation of regular category dipropylene glycol contain urethanes, paints & coatings whereas the main applications of high purity category of dipropylene glycol comprise cosmetics, fragrance, and personal care. The increasing demand from all such purposes is expected to boost the global dipropylene glycol market.

The increasing applications in the personal care and cosmetics industries due to the low toxicity and high solubility of DPG are likely to drive the market. For instance, the increasing use of DPG in perfume manufacturing and odor sensitive applications due to its low odor is creating hype in the market. The use of DPG as plasticizer, polymerization initiator, additive, plasticizer and other in the chemical and polymer industries is creating positive impact on the market growth.

However, DPG is an active skin and eye irritant which can sometimes cause irritation. Additionally, threats from alternatives like 2-Methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPO) is likely to hinder the market growth. But, the lower toxicity and rising applications of DPG shall generate opportunities for the market growth.

Regional Analysis:

The market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. Asia Pacific is estimated to dominate the market for dipropylene glycol attributed to the high demand for plasticizer and polyurethane resins from China and India. Moreover, the growing textile industry is increasing the demand for textile lubricants substantially increasing the demand for DPG. North America and Europe is expected to grow significantly due to the increasing use of glycols in printing inks, perfumes, body lotions, and other products. Latin America and Middle East and Africa are expected to show sluggish growth by the end of the forecast period.
