Natural fibers are fibers that are produced naturally by plants, animals, and geological processes. They are used as constituent of composite materials, where the direction of fiber varies the properties. Natural fibers can also be manufactured into sheets to make paper. The natural fibres are classified according to the origin of the fiber. It is used for industrial applications, to produce natural fiber composites, nanocomposites, and biomaterials. Sisal also referred as sisal hemp, is a type of Agave plant which is local to southern Mexico but is widely cultivated and adopted in other countries. It yields a rigid fiber used in making a range of products. Fiber is removed by decortications process in which leaves of the plant are crushed, beaten, and swept away by a rotating wheel set with rounded knives, so that only fibres remain as the end-product. It is used in making carpets, ropes, spa products, cat scratching pots, lumbar support belts, rugs, clothes, and other products.

Increasing demand for high strength fibres, such as ramie, sisal, and curaua fiber, is likely to put into the market growth. Natural fibers are also used in composite materials, much like synthetic or glass fibers often called as bio-composites. Additionally, the biodegradability and renewability of the natural fibres is likely to create a positive impact on the market. Natural fibers also act as good biomaterials in medical applications. Chitin is noteworthy and is incorporated in various medical uses. Chitin based materials are used to remove built-up pollutants from water, converted into fibers and films, and used as biosensors in the food and beverages sector. Chitin has also been used several of medical applications such as its incorporation as a bone filler and for tissue regeneration, a drug transporter and binder, and as anti-tumor agent. These wide applications of natural fibres and sisal are likely to boost the market growth.

However, the strong competition from the alternatives like synthetic fibers due to its high saturation across various end-use industries which include automotive, textile, and medical is likely to hinder the market growth. Moreover, the manufacturing and operational process involves high energy usage and are cost-intensive, which can raise the cost of the final products. But, the emergence of highly developed techniques for fiber manufacturing is expected to lower the overall cost, which is further likely to drive the market growth.

Natural Fibres and Sisal Industry Developments

  • In March 2020, UPM biocomposites developed a wood-based biocomposite material known as UPM Formi EcoAce contains cellulose fiber and with up to 100 % renewable resources. This material meets the highest sustainability requirement. The adoption of such kind of renewable biocomposite will reduce the overall carbon footprint of the application.

  • In January 2016, Bcomp Ltd launched a new generation of powerRibs, a low density, high modulus, low transverse compressibility product of flax-fibers as a high-performance bio-based alternative in automotive sector.
