In recent times, the lifestyle of consumers has undergone changes owing to the improvement in the standard of living. Due to the busier lifestyle, consumers worldwide highly consume fast food, which has led to several diseases such as obesity, cancer, and others. Hence consumers are opting for a healthier lifestyle and a balanced diet to improve their health. As dietary fiber is associated with several health-promoting functions, there is an increasing demand for these products in the market.

Dietary fiber refers to plant-based polysaccharides, which are a form of carbohydrate that is non-digestible. These materials are not hydrolyzed by the enzymes which are secreted by the digestive tract. They form an essential part of a healthy and balanced diet and can be classified into two major categories, namely soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. Soluble dietary fiber has a higher concentration of water compared to insoluble fiber.

There are several sources of soluble dietary fiber, including oats, peas, beans, apples, vegetables such as broccoli, turnips, fruits such as pear and figs. There are different types of soluble dietary fiber which include gums, pectins, psyllium, among others.

Several advantages are associated with the addition of soluble fiber to the diet. These fibers help lower the levels of lipoprotein, also known as bad cholesterols, in the body. It also slows down the absorption of sugar in the body and thus improves the body's blood sugar levels and reduces the associated risk of developing type 2 diabetes. For people who suffer from weighing-related problems, fiber-rich food helps reduce food cravings and promote weight loss. Additionally, as these soluble fiber dissolves, it creates a gel that helps to improve digestion, improves bowel health, and increases bowel regularity.  Dietary fiber is also associated with reducing cancer risk and thus enables a person to live a long and healthy life.

Major regulatory bodies such as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also approve the health claims associated with these products. The agency supports the claims that the use of dietary fibers reduces the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), cancer, and other life-threatening diseases. This support also helps to promote the growth of the soluble dietary fiber market.

There are several side effects when there is a sudden increase in the intake of dietary fiber. An increase in fiber intake by consuming 70 grams more than the normal levels has been found to cause several health problems such as abdominal pain, bloating, and constipation. Additionally, the research and development cost associated with developing soluble fiber products is also high.
