Wood recycling is a process which involves the processing of waste wood which is created by different end-use industries and is recycled for further use in other applications such as the manufacture of wood panels, animal bedding, generation of electricity, etc. The increasing adoption of biomass coupled with demand in the building & construction industry and energy & power sectors is driving the market. Wood can so easily transform into new products. Cities can use wood for pathways, mulch, or fuel. Even animals benefit, as wood can be used in cat litter or bedding. Recycling wood not only has environmental benefits, but it also cuts down on costs. It’s often cheaper to send waste to a biomass-to-energy producer or processing plant rather than a landfill. On leaving wood processing factories, fuel is used to feed boilers and power networks from industrial or public authorities. In some cases, wood recycling also results in the generation of electricity, as it heats water to produce steam, which in turn, power generators.

The adoption of renewable and sustainable sources of energy, such as biomass to reduce carbon emissions is increasing. Moreover, several governments around the world frame favourable policies and grant subsidies to encourage the production of biomass energy, due to the declination of non-renewable sources of energy such as fossil fuels. Thus, the increasing adoption of biomass would increase the demand for raw materials like wood pellets and unused thin wood.

Wood-based panel manufacturers make the wood panels by using the wood from furniture and materials manufacturers which are castoff in shop fitting & construction. Class B and AB are used to produce chipboard, which is a factor that increases the demand for recycled wood. Class A recycled wood obtained from pallet recycling is the main energy resource derived from terrestrial biomass, which propels the wood recycling market to expand.

However, lack of proper collection from the end-use industries, improper segregation of waste wood, and less availability of recycling facilities is expected to restrain the market growth for wood recycling.

Market Segmentation:

Based on type, the market of wood recycling is segmented into softwood, hardwood, blackboard, plywood, oriented strand board, chipboard, and medium density fireboard hardboard. Based on the application, the market for wood recycling is segmented into wood panels, energy generation, particle board, chip core or laminates, animal bedding, mulch or decorative landscaping material, pulp and paper products, composting material and others. Regional Analysis:

In terms of geography, the market is categorized into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa

Asia-Pacific accounts for a significant share of the wood recycling market as the demand for recycled wood has increased due to the demand from various applications like wood panel processing, animal and poultry bedding, energy generation, and others. The huge market for the pulp industry in China, also adds to the growth of this market, as it holds more than 50% share in the Asia Pacific market.

North America also experiences a high demand for recycled wood for wood panel manufacturing, due to growing demand for plywood and wooden panels, and thus driving demand for wood recycling in this area.

Europe also holds a prominent share in this market, due to growing environmental concerns, and the need to recycle all sorts of products. Demand for waste wood products such as wood pellets is driven primarily by increasing energy-sector use of renewables. There is an increase in attention to generating renewable energy from biomass in most of the European countries. Middle East & Africa and Latin America are expected to show high demand in near future. Latin America have high demand due to presence of more wood sources. Brazil is one of major producers of wood and also wood recycling is high in this region.

Wood Recycling Industry Developments

  • In May 2019, Enva introduced a new microsite for wood recycling namely enva.com/wood, to combine all the waste wood expertise on a single site. This launch grades the result of recycling throughout, to merge Hadfield Wood Recyclers into the current wood recycling sector at Enva, making it one of UK's largest wood recycling operations.

  • In Jan 2019, Morbark, LLC acquired DENIS CIMAF, Inc., based in Roxton Falls, Québec. The purchase of DENIS CIMAF is another step in the Company's strategic focus on broadening the range of tree care and industrial equipment, aftermarket parts, and service offered to their customers.
