Intracranial stents are medical devices which are implanted in the brain of individuals suffering from brain aneurysms and intracranial stenosis to maintain blood flow. Intracranial stents are tubes composed of wire mesh that is capable of expanding and the mesh is composed up of nitinol, a blend of nickel and titanium. Brain aneurysms are the thinner or weaker spots inside a blood vessel in the brain that fills with blood after being ballooned out. Often this wall is weakened by abnormalities present at birth, injuries or diseases. Intracranial stenosis refers to the narrowing of brain blood vessels. Most often, the narrowing is caused by atherosclerosis and a build-up of fat and other substances such as plaques in the blood vessels.

Intracranial stents also significantly reduce the probability of strokes in patients with symptomatic intracranial stenosis, when considered against medical therapy alone. According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an estimated 6 million individuals in the United States have a brain aneurysm that has not ruptured, and the annual rate of rupture is estimated to be about 30,000 people.

One of the key drivers for the growth of the global intracranial stents is the increasing prevalence of neurological disorders such as intracranial stenosis (strokes) and brain aneurysms. This along with recent regulatory approvals for intracranial stents in the treatment of neurology disorders such as Stryker’s Neuroform Atlas Stent System receiving U.S. FDA approval in 2017 are factors propelling the growth of the global intracranial stents market.

The factor that is expected to inhibit the growth of the market is the huge costs associated with intracranial stents. For instance, recent research states that the placement of intracranial stents is recommended in cases where the stenosis is 70% or higher and the reduced risk of stroke after the placement of the intracranial stent is offset by the significantly higher procedure costs.

Regional Analysis

The global intracranial stents market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. North America is expected to hold a significant proportion of market share, due to the increasing prevalence of neurological disorders and high medical expenditure for the technologically advanced intracranial stents. In Asia Pacific, emerging markets such as China and India are expected to provide the largest market opportunity. This is due to the increasing disposable incomes leading to higher healthcare expenditure, increasing awareness regarding neurological disorders and improving healthcare infrastructure.
