LPG Tankers Market Size & Future Outlook

The global LPG tankers market size was valued at USD 223.65 million in 2025. The market is projected to grow from USD 238.86 million in 2026 to USD 404.31 million by 2034, exhibiting a CAGR of 6.80% during the forecast period.

The global LPG tankers market is expanding owing to the increasing installation of LPG infrastructure, including terminals and refueling stations. LPG tanker refers to a carrier, either a ship or truck designed to transport the LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) from one location to another. These are classified into different types, such as fully pressurized tankers, semi-pressurized tankers, and fully refrigerated tankers. The design and construction of these vessels adhere to stringent international safety and environmental regulations to prevent leaks and accidents during transportation.

Technological advancements in the LPG industry, such as improved storage facilities, enhanced transport logistics, and innovations in tanker design, also contribute to the efficiency of LPG distribution. Global LPG trading is on the rise due to an increasing worldwide demand for energy, greater adoption of LPG by both residential and industrial users, and changing consumer preferences toward alternatives to traditional fuels. Furthermore, fluctuations in crude oil prices have led to a higher demand for liquefied petroleum gas from petrochemical sectors, which is likely to increase the need for LPG tankers.

According to ISL (Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics), the gas carrier sector witnessed substantial growth in 2024, continuing its strong fleet expansion. As of early 2025, the global gas tanker fleet comprised 2,466 vessels with a combined capacity of 171 million cubic meters (mcbm). This fleet included 1,662 LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) carriers, accounting for 49.5 mcbm, and 804 LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) units with a significantly larger capacity of approximately 121 mcbm.

LPG Tankers Market Drivers

Rising Demand for LPG from the Petrochemical Industry Drives the Market Growth

The petrochemical industry processes oil and natural gas to create a wide array of chemical products, including plastic, synthetic rubber, solvents, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and more. In this industry, LPG serves as crucial feedstock for producing olefins such as ethylene and propylene, which are then used to manufacture various petrochemical products such as plastics, synthetic rubber, and fibers. LPG is cost-effective and have versatile energy source especially when compared to naphtha. Due to these reasons, the demand for LPG has increased in the petrochemical industry for manufacturing various chemical products, which resulted in the increasing demand for the LPG tanker to transport.

Increasing Demand for LPG as a Clean and Efficient Fuel

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is an adaptable fuel that is gaining popularity for a variety of applications, such as cooking, heating, and transportation. It is clean-burning fuel that generates fewer emissions compared to other fossil fuels, making it an attractive choice for lessening air pollution. Furthermore, LPG is quite efficient, leading to lower fuel consumption when powering vehicles and appliances relative to other fuels. The increasing demand for LPG as a clean and efficient energy alternative is anticipated to boost the LPG tanker market.

LPG Tankers Market Restraints

Increasing Use of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) May Hinder Market Growth

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is a fuel derived from natural gas that is compressed to smaller volumes and it is the best alternative for gasoline and diesel for vehicles. One of the primary advantages of CNG is its cleaner combustion, which results in lower emissions of harmful pollutants compared to conventional fuels such as gasoline and diesel. This characteristic makes CNG an environmentally friendly choice that contributes to improved air quality. CNG also has industrial and cooking applications. The popularity of CNG is increasing compared to LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) due to its lower emissions, environmental benefits, and cost-effectiveness. As a result, the market for LPG tankers is experiencing a decline, as more consumers and businesses choose the benefits provided by CNG.

LPG Tankers Market Opportunities

Technological Advancements in Tanker Design Boosts Market Growth

Innovations in LPG tanker design are enhancing safety features and operational efficiency, thereby transforming the market landscape. In alignment with global sustainability objectives, improvements in propulsion systems, insulating materials, and hull designs result in reduced emissions and decreased fuel consumption. Integrated real-time monitoring systems and digital ship management technologies collaborate to optimize route planning and minimize turnaround times. Ship owners and operators are increasingly adopting these technologies, which improve overall logistics, lower maintenance costs, and enhance the competitiveness of LPG tankers in meeting global energy demands.

Analysis by Tanker Type

Based on tanker type, the market is segmented into fully pressurized, semi-pressurized and semi-refrigerated, and fully refrigerated.

The fully pressurized segment is the leading segment in the LPG tanker market. These tankers are compact but have a high cargo capacity. Fully pressurized tankers can transport LPG with a cargo capacity of up to 3,500 m³ in either spherical or cylindrical steel tanks. They operate at a pressure of 17.5 kg/cm³ and can function at temperatures as low as -45°C. Since these vessels transport LPG at ambient temperature, they do not need insulation and are constructed from regular-grade thick steel. This feature simplifies their design and reduces overall expenses, as these tankers can be produced using standard thick steel, making them both durable and cost-effective.

The semi-pressurized and semi-refrigerated segment is experiencing the fastest growth. These tankers are employed to carry a range of gases including LPG, VCM, butadiene, and propylene. This ship is the most popular among operators of smaller-size gas carriers. These tankers are equipped with re-liquefaction plants to adjust the temperature of the gas as necessary during the loading and unloading processes. Semi-pressurized and semi-refrigerated tankers have a capacity ranging from 1,500 to 30000 m³ and maintain a pressure range of 4-8 bar. Semi-refrigerated gas tankers are frequently utilized for LPG transportation over moderate distances. The segment is driven by advantages such as lower fuel consumption compared to fully refrigerated carriers, enhanced safety, and efficient transportation over shorter distances.

  • For instance, in March 2025, Greek dry bulk shipping company Diana Shipping announced plans to diversify its business by investing into new vessel types – liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) ships. The company revealed that it has 80% equity interest in a transaction for the construction of two 7,500 cbm semi-refrigerated LPG new buildings, with an option for two additional vessels.

Analysis by Vessel Capacity

Based on vessel capacity, the market is categorized into small size (up to 15000 m3), mid-size (25000 – 50000 m3), and large size (50000 – 70000 m3).

The large size segment is dominating the LPG tanker market, with a capacity that ranges from 50000 to 70000 m3. Typically, these tankers are utilized for long-distance transportation specifically from the U.S. and Middle East Gulf to Asia. Large LPG tankers can reduce transportation costs per unit due to their capacity which is essential for the market. Furthermore, these vessels often have complex operational and regulatory requirements, necessitating advanced shipbuilding technologies and strict compliance with safety regulations.

The mid-size segment experiences significant growth in the market. These tankers are heavily used for medium-haul cross-trades and regional trade purposes. Their capacity ranges from 25000 to 50000 m3. The growth in this segment is driven by rise in regional trade and demand from the petrochemical industry for LPG.
