Indian Health Ministry Mulls Plans to Bring Dialysis Services to Kidney Patients’ Doorsteps
With the goal to ensure equitable access to kidney care services to citizens, the Central Health Ministry of India announced its plans in May 2019 to deliver peritoneal dialysis facilities to patients with kidney conditions at their homes. The service will be provided under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Program, which was launched in 2016 and was aimed at offering free care services to patients in district hospitals. Although peritoneal procedure was not included in the original scheme, it will now be delivered through district-based hemodialysis centers. Such proactive steps by government authorities to counter delicate and complicated health conditions are adding a new dimension to the market dynamics.

Exponential Spread of COVID-19 to Reorient Players’ Priorities
The rapid spread of the coronavirus infection has led to a sudden surge in demand for dialysis machines as the disease is known to damage the kidneys. Key market players are tuning their response to this unprecedented crisis by increasing their production capacities to meet the escalating demand. For example, in April 2020, Baxter International and Fresenius Medical Care North America teamed up to provide these machines for COVID-19 patients who have been affected by acute kidney injury. While Fresenius has formed a National Intensive Renal Care Reserve with a pool of over 150 dialysis equipment, Baxter is increasing its air freight capacity and other transport network to expedite delivery of critical equipment. Similar efforts are being taken from government bodies as well. The US Department of Health & Human Services deployed 50 machines to ICUs in New York and Long Island for patients with acute kidney injury caused by COVID-19.
Rising Focus on Emerging Economies by Players to Stir Competitive Spirits
The dialysis market growth is set to accelerate in the coming years as major competitors shift their focus on consumers in emerging economies such as India and China. These countries have an ever-expanding patient pool of kidney patients owing to the increasing prevalence of diabetes and other chronic conditions that induce renal disorders. This has created wide, lucrative opportunities for companies, which they hope to tap by establishing their presence in such regions through introduction innovative products.
