Dialysis Market to Hit USD 177.56 Billion by 2027; Increasing Demand for Hemodialysis Procedures among Patients to Propel Market Growth

June 24, 2020 | Healthcare

The global dialysis market size is projected to touch USD 177.56 billion by 2027 owing to the increasing prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide, shares Fortune Business Insights™ in its report, titled “Dialysis Market Size, Share & COVID-19 Impact Analysis, By Type (Products and Services), By Dialysis Type (Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis), By End User (Dialysis Centers & Hospitals and Home Care), and Regional Forecast, 2020-2027”. According to the report, the value of this market was at USD 90.33 billion in 2019 and is expected to register a CAGR of 7.7% from 2020 to 2027.

The growth of this market is likely to get a booster shot this year on account of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The infection caused by the coronavirus attacks multiple organs, including kidneys, which has escalated the demand for these services and products, especially to treat coronavirus patients developing acute kidney damage due to the infection.

Indian Health Ministry Mulls Plans to Bring Dialysis Services to Kidney Patients’ Doorsteps

With the goal to ensure equitable access to kidney care services to citizens, the Central Health Ministry of India announced its plans in May 2019 to deliver peritoneal dialysis facilities to patients with kidney conditions at their homes. The service will be provided under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Program, which was launched in 2016 and was aimed at offering free care services to patients in district hospitals. Although peritoneal procedure was not included in the original scheme, it will now be delivered through district-based hemodialysis centers. Such proactive steps by government authorities to counter delicate and complicated health conditions are adding a new dimension to the market dynamics.

Exponential Spread of COVID-19 to Reorient Players’ Priorities

The rapid spread of the coronavirus infection has led to a sudden surge in demand for dialysis machines as the disease is known to damage the kidneys. Key market players are tuning their response to this unprecedented crisis by increasing their production capacities to meet the escalating demand. For example, in April 2020, Baxter International and Fresenius Medical Care North America teamed up to provide these machines for COVID-19 patients who have been affected by acute kidney injury.
