Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is a treatment processes involving a biological process with a semi-permeable or perm-selective membrane. This process is combination of a membrane process such as ultrafiltration or microfiltration with a bioreactor with suspended growth, and is commonly used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. The major advantages of membrane bioreactor that tertiary filtration, and seconadry clarifiers processes are removed and plant footprint is therefore reduced. In certain situations, footprint can be further reduced as other process units such as digesters or UV disinfection may be removed as well. The Membrane Bioreactor or MBR is based on the traditional wastewater method but micro-organism separation is achieved by membrane filtration.

Increased water stress and high quality effluent output by MBRs is rising the demand for the membrane bioreactor in wastewater treatment. Increasing the adoption of environmentally sustainable water management technologies in the wastewater and industrial sector is expected to drive the global membrane bioreactor market. Growing quantities of industrial waste due to increasing oil& gas, pharmaceutical, textile, manufacturing, food & beverages and pulp & paper industries is likely to create opportunties for the market during the forecast period. Rising water demand as a result of increasing population would increase wastewater treatment adoption. Furthermore, through fresh and potable water supply is expected to drive production. Growth in demographics, changing habits of consumption, climate change, urbanization and industrialization is projected to boost the market. Growing community understanding of adequate sanitation funded by fiscal legislative projects is anticipated to drive the demand for membrane bioreactor. The growing population, followed by increased urbanization, would further contribute to the market across the developing economies.

The high initial investment and operating costs is expected to hinder the growth of membrane bioreactor market. In addition, the increasing incidence of fouling in the membrane biorecator is likely to restarin the market during the forecast period. Higher capital and maintenance costs due to membrane cleaning and replacement and high energy costs are drawbacks of membrane bioreactor. Additionally, additional chemicals may be required to increase the settling rate of a waste sludge in the system.

MEMBRANE BIOREACTOR MARKET Regional Analysis:

The membrane bioreactor market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. North America is expected to hold the major share of the global membrane bioreactor market. The strong presence of chemical, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, and automotive manufacturing facilities in the U.S. is expected to drive demand for water treatment services during the forecast period.

Asia Pacific is expcetd to expand at rapid pace during the forecast period due to the large food & beverage, textile and pharmaceutical manufacturing base in China, Singapore and India. Growing population, ongoing industrialization and increasing foreign investments in the urban and municipal wastewater treatment sectors are anticipated to fuel the market during the forecast period. The optimistic outlook for the mining sector in China is expected to play a crucial role in increasing the application of sludge treatment for landfill due to the abundance of steel and coppers, and rare earth minerals. Various government initiatives in India, including "Atal Project for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT)", and "Housing for All by 2022" and  is likley to boost the housing sector, which in turn to increase the use of municipal wastewater facilities for urban populations.

In addition, Mexico's government passed a new Public Private Partnership (PPP) law in 2012 with the approval of the Mexican Congress, which aims to encourage investments in upgrading and re-establishing water purification plants and desalination facilities at the domestic level. Thus likely to provide opportunities for the market.

Membrane Bioreactor Industry Developments

  • In Januray 2019, KMS installed the U.K.’s largest bioreactor membrane system. Koch Membrane Systems (KMS) has upgraded Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works, providing improved processing capacity without raising the plant's footprint. In cooperation with 4Delivery KMS replaced the new conventional activated sludge network at Woolston with the ultrafiltration membrane PULSION MBR

  • In July 2019, DuPont announced to acquire the Memcor company from Evoqua Water Technologies Corp., including membrane biofiltration technologies, and ultrafiltration. Ultrafiltration and membrane biofiltration (MBR) technologies by Evoqua add water purification and separation capabilities to DuPont's portfolio including reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and ion exchange resins.
