Perlite is a siliceous volcanic glass, which is formed by hydration of obsidian. Raw perlite expands to 20 times its volume when rapidly heated due to the release of steam forming a foamed structure. This form of perlite is called expanded perlite, which has found application in construction, agricultural, and industrial sectors. Perlite is an excellent insulator; thus, it is utilized in the construction of cryogenic storage vessels and building insulations. Perlite shows pozzolanic properties, making it suitable to be used as a natural pozzolan. Additionally, perlite finds usage in textile and refractory manufacturing, resulting in further expansion of the market.

Perlite is an excellent water and nutrient retainer, which has resulted in a surge in its demand for hydroponic farming and cannabis cultivation. The legalization of cannabis cultivation in the U.S. and recently in Canada is expected to further invigorate the growth of the perlite market during the forecast period.

However, perlite can be replaced by diatomite, expanded clay & shale, pumice, and slag in construction application and by vermiculite, coco coir, and wood pulp in the horticultural application. Thus, the availability of better alternatives impedes the growth of the perlite market.
